I needed a reason to make this in the first place. My friend lost his phone and started to use his Apple Watch as his primary device. This got me thinking. I thought, if he could use it successfully as a phone, why don't I just make it a real thing, but using Airpods as the speakers and microphones?
This is my first version. I made it simple with the AirPods sticking out and working as a speaker and microphone. The case was made out of flexible filament so it was pretty easy to put in and take out.
The first model had it's problems. So after getting a bunch of downvotes on reddit and a bunch of criticism, I created a newer model with flush AirPods. This one was also made from flexible filament. It had curved edges for a nicer feel in the hand and the top speaker was horizontal. The Apple Watch is perfectly centered and has partial access to both buttons. This one wasn't my best model and was just the transition between the bare AirPods to the completely flush.
Since this was a fairly small project, the only revision I made to the other design was fixing it's major flaws. 1. The curved bottom made it hard for the printer to print and ended up with rough edges that didn't look nice. 2. The Apple Watch was too centered, making it near impossible to push the buttons when I wanted. 3. It wasn't a big problem, but I changed up the orientation of the top speaker from horizontal to vertical to make it look more like a modern smartphone.
